Activity #3…Buy a HAT!

“Women wearing hats are at once sophisticated and whimsical….Their faces are younger and softer.  They carry themselves differently, daintily, like deer.  Their voices flutter a bit…even when they are talking about things like money and power and work, even when it’s clear they’re very much in charge of their lives.” (from “O” Magazine).

I have never been a big hat person but they do always look like such fun, so what the heck!

What fun…trying on hat after hat.  Hoping you pick the same one I bought!  If not, guess I’ll have to go back and buy another!

A hat alters the image we have of ourselves, and the image others see as well.  For the hours we wear it, it brings out different dimension in our personality, much as a costume aids an actress in her role.”

Hearthstone Inn

Hearthstone Inn

Well, as happened in week 4, life’s surprises presented me with an opportunity to do something on my list, so I took that opportunity in the moment and postponed what I had in mind.  In fact, the weekend surprised me twice with synchronicities so you’ll have to tune in next week for Part 2!

I love to stay at Bed and Breakfasts.  They are typically charming, quaint, & have such homey ambiance.  Love it!

Well, last weekend my husband and I went for a weekend getaway with my sister and her husband to an event they were attending in Wilmington, Ohio.  The two of them planned the entire thing.  We were just along for the ride!  We understood we were heading into a small town and so we didn’t expect much in the way of accommodations, dining, or ambiance.  Boy were we wrong!  Not only was were the accommodations lovely, dining outstanding, and town charming, they also unknowingly provided activity #35 on my list… staying at a Bed & Breakfast that I had not been to before.  Not only had I not stayed here before, I didn’t even know I was going to be staying there!  Way fun.  Week 8 of Project Celebrate 50!…done!

Hearthstone lobbyWe pulled into the covered driveway to the Hearthstone Inn in Cedarville, Ohio, between Dayton & Columbus, and were enchanted.  We then met Ruth, the Inn owner, who was such a thoughtful hostess.  We fell in love with Ruth and her Inn.  We plan on returning and we also talked about working on planning a retreat to be held at the Inn.

Idlewyld Bed & Breakfast

Idlewyld Bed & Breakfast

Which makes me think of this by the way.  I just finalized the plans for my June wellness retreat being held at Idlewyld, in Lakeside, OH,  June 4-6, 2010.  Come as a couple.  Come with friends.  Come alone and devote the weekend to nurturing yourself & renewing your spirit!  Daily walks, meditations, drumming journey, vision board/pj/wine party, journaling, bach flower remedies, joy bracelets/bookmarks, secrets to decluttering, & much more!

Ruth and SueI digress…back to Hearthstone Inn. Ruth suggested we try dinner at a cute, trendy bistro for dinner called the Sunrise Café   in the nearby town of Yellow Springs , an artsy community about 10 minutes away.  Dinner was excellent…fresh, organic, made from scratch food.  And Yellow Springs was delightful.  We went back to Yellow Springs in the morning to stop in at some of the fun shops.  Stayed tuned till next week to find out what I found from my list at a local shop!

You really should plan a getaway here.  It was relaxing & delightful!  And Ruth will take great care of you.

So…did life surprise YOU lately?  Makes me think of that song by India Arie called a Beautiful Day..love the words.

A Beautiful Day

Life is a journey,
Not a destination,
There are no mistakes,
Just chances we’ve taken
Lay down your regrets cause all we have is now

Wake up in the morning
And get out of bed
Start making a mental list in my head
Of all of the things that I am grateful for

Early in the morning
It’s the dawn of a new day
New hopes new dreams new ways
I open up my eyes and
I open up my mind and
I wonder how life will surprise me today
Early in the morning
It’s the dawn of a new day
New hopes new dreams new ways
I open up my heart and
I’m gon’ do my part and
Make this a positively beautiful day

La la la la la la la la la (x3)
It’s a Beautiful Day (x3)

Life is a challenge not a competition
You can still smell the roses and be on a mission
Just take a moment to get in touch with your heart
Sometimes you feel like you’ve got something to prove
Remind yourself that there’s only one you
Just take a moment to give thanks of who you are

Early in the morning
It’s the dawn of a new day
New hopes, new dreams, new ways
I open up my eyes and
I open up my mind and
I wonder how life will surprise me today

Early in the morning
It’s the dawn of a new day
New hopes, new dreams, new ways
I open up my heart and
I’m gon’ do my part and
Make this a positively beautiful day

La la la la la la la la la (x3)
It’s a Beautiful Day (x2)

Let’s make this a wonderful
Let’s make this a powerful
Let’s make this a Beautiful Day
It’s a Beautiful Day

Life is a journey,
Not a destination,
There are no mistakes,
Just chances we’ve taken
Lay down your regrets cause all we have is now

SO…how did life surprise YOU today???

Week 7 of Celebrate 50!

Pam Heitenan, Ashiatsu massage therapist
Pam Heitenan, Ashiatsu massage therapist

The wonders & benefits of massage are well documented and I avail myself whenever possible!  I also try a variety of massage approaches.  For my Intentional Living project I wanted to try a massage approach I have never experienced before.  So this week I had an Ashiatsu Oriental Bar barefoot massage.  This is a massage where the therapist uses their bare feet to provide a deep tissue massage, using bars suspended from the ceiling as their support.  Wondrous!   Extraordinary!  Penetrating!  I love a firm, deep massage and this was spectacular.  Here are 2 you tube videos to give you an idea.

I also have been extremely tight in my upper back, shoulder, & neck area for quite a long time.  Pam, the massage therapist used Muscle Release Technique on this area where “the client is placed in particular positions so that the muscle begins to stretch in a very specific direction of plane. Then pressure is applied directly into the focal point of the affected tissue. The combination of a specific extension, precise pinpoint compression, and an exact plane of movement, while working with the breath, can produce an immediate release.  The scar tissue is broken up and the muscle length is restored. “

I had the massage on Monday and wanted to wait till the end of the week to write as the tissue work was deep and I had some soreness for a few days.  I drank lots of water, and am thrilled to say that not only did I have a really great feeling massage, but I do think my neck and shoulders are looser.  How wonderful!  Thank you Pam.  If you would like to try this interesting massage technique the massage therapist I went to is Pam Heitanen, 440-251-0087, pam4prosperity@yahoo.com.  She is located in Mentor, Ohio.

Week #6 of Celebrate 50!

Humane SocietyI remember the day we adopted Whiskers, our cat.  We went to the Humane Society looking to adopt a kitten.  There were none that day.  But the sweetest 1 year old cat caught our attention so we took her into one of those playrooms they have, thinking we would just play with her for a while & leave, because, after all, we wanted a kitten.  Well I don’t know who gave her PR training but she won us over in 5 minutes!  She was loving us, purring, her eyes twinkling.  As she wound around our legs and begged us to scratch her you could practically hear her say “Pick ME!  I love you!  I love you!  Pick ME!”  We did pick her and she’s loved us every moment since.  She is a joy.

So..that experience behind me, I kind of assumed (uh oh) that one can drop in & play with the animals, providing some TLC & socialization, precisely activity #21 on my Celebrate 50! list.  Well, turns out you have to fill out a 4 page application form & attend a volunteer orientation to be able to share your love.  So, I visited with the animals at their cages, but there was a sign not to pet them through the cage, so..mainly I showered them with verbal love – not quite the same effect for either of us.

If I do decide to volunteer on an ongoing basis, wonder if I my application will be approved?  I have lots of pet experience.  One of my sons was quite a pet lover and over his childhood we owned animals of nearly every type:  Snakes, iguana, lizards, turtles, hermit crabs, frogs, toads, fish, birds, ferrets, dogs, cats, rabbit, guinea pig, mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters (sorry to any of you loved ones I may have forgotten:)…even had a funeral for a lady bug once.

Anyways, back to the day at the Humane Society.….Funny thing.  I am a planner.  I know many of my activities need advance preparation & I am working on setting many of them up.  This one I hadn’t anticipated.  The “old” me would have been disappointed, but the “new” me believes everything happens for a reason & so there is never need to be distressed.  So..who knows, maybe I’m suppose to sign up to volunteer there & if I would have called ahead I would have taken the activity off my list.  Who knows.  Hmm.  Will watch in “observer” mode to see how things play out.

I love “observer” mode – it helps me take the personalization & sting out of all that life drama.  Just stand back, observe, learn, & act…and NOT react.

Maybe I’m suppose to play with my own cat more!  Hmm….
